James is an independent art advisor specialising in the acquisition, valuation and management of art and private collections.
With 15 years’ experience at the highest levels of the UK art market, James brings together art historical knowledge, market expertise and a deep understanding of collecting. His experience spans valuation, acquisition, sale, collection management and business development, giving him a uniquely broad perspective on the journey of an artwork, from discovery and due diligence to acquisition, ownership and, where appropriate, eventual sale.
James works closely with private clients to identify exceptional works, make informed acquisitions and develop collections that are both personally meaningful and considered in the context of the wider home. His approach is independent, discreet and high tailored, drawing on an extensive network across the art market and relative professional discipline.
Alongside his expertise in art, James has a longstanding interest in interiors, design and property. He holds an MA in Property & Spatial Planning form the University of Aberdeen and a postgraduate qualification in Interior Design, alongside an MLitt in Art History from the University of Glasgow, where his studies focused particularly on collecting and provenance.
He has a particular expertise in the Scottish Art market, with an in-depth knowledge of its artists, collections and institutions. He advises clients on opportunities within Scotland and beyond, helping them navigate the market with confidence, curiosity and a genuine appreciation of Art.
