James DS McNaught | Art Advisory
Art Collection Management | Fine Art Valuations | Independent Art Advisory

Building an art collection often begins with passion: a first painting acquired at auction, a sculpture that captures the imagination, or a collection passed down through generations. Over time, what begins as a personal interest can develop into a significant private collection, carrying both financial value and a rich cultural and family history.
As a collection grows, so too does the importance of understanding what it contains, how it should be cared for, what it may be worth and how best to manage it for the future.
Drawing on 15 years of experience in the auction world, including senior roles at Lyon & Turnbull, alongside work with private galleries, collectors and cultural institutions, I provide independent art advisory, collection management and valuation services to private individuals, families, estates, trusts and institutions.
My approach combines specialist art-market knowledge, commercial understanding and a considered appreciation of the historical and cultural significance of individual works. Whether advising on an established collection, undertaking a valuation or helping a family navigate the future of inherited works, the objective is to provide clarity, confidence and a long-term perspective.
Collection Management
Every collection tells a story. It may encompass Scottish Modernism, British and European paintings, contemporary art, sculpture, silver, ceramics or decorative arts acquired over decades and across generations.
Understanding a collection requires more than an inventory. It involves bringing together the history of individual works, their provenance, condition, market position and significance within the wider collection, while identifying opportunities for future development.
Drawing on my experience of valuing, cataloguing and advising on works across a broad range of collecting categories, I help clients establish a clear picture of their holdings and make informed decisions about their future.
Services include:
Comprehensive, illustrated collection inventories and cataloguing.
Provenance research and the organisation of supporting documentation.
Consolidation of purchase records, invoices, historical archives and valuation records.
Fine art valuations for insurance, probate, estate administration and other specified purposes.
Collection reviews to identify opportunities for acquisition, sale, exhibition, loan or charitable donation.
Coordination with conservators, specialist shippers, auction houses, galleries and other professional advisers.
Long-term collection strategies, including succession planning and intergenerational transfer.
Whether overseeing a single important work or a substantial collection accumulated over several generations, my role is to bring together the information, expertise and practical considerations necessary for its effective management.
Fine Art Valuations
A considered valuation is fundamental to responsible collection management. It provides a basis for insurance, estate administration and financial planning, while helping owners understand how individual works sit within the wider art market.
My experience in the auction sector has provided first-hand insight into the factors that influence value, including provenance, condition, attribution, exhibition history, scholarly research, market demand and the availability of comparable sales.
Valuations are tailored to their intended purpose, which may include:
Insurance and reinstatement.
Probate and estate administration.
Inheritance tax planning and other tax-related purposes.
Family division, matrimonial matters and estate planning.
Current market assessments to inform potential sales or acquisitions.
Different valuation purposes require different approaches and bases of value. I work with clients and, where appropriate, their solicitors, accountants and other professional advisers to establish the relevant requirements and ensure that valuations are appropriate to their intended use.
As the market changes, periodic reviews can also help ensure that insurance cover remains appropriate and that decisions are informed by current evidence rather than historic purchase prices or outdated estimates.
Independent Art Advisory
My career has encompassed the commercial realities of the auction world, the specialist knowledge of individual collecting categories and the relationships that connect collectors, galleries, institutions and the wider art market.
This experience informs an independent advisory practice that looks beyond any single route to market. An auction may be the right solution for one work; a private sale, gallery placement, exhibition or institutional loan may be more appropriate for another.
I advise clients on acquisitions, collection development, strategic sales, due diligence and the wider considerations involved in owning and managing art. Where appropriate, I can also coordinate with relevant specialists and professional advisers to support a considered, well-informed decision.
Independence allows recommendations to be shaped around the client's objectives, whether these involve developing a collection, realising capital, rationalising holdings or preserving important works for future generations.
Art, Value and Legacy
Art occupies a distinctive position within a family's wealth. It can represent a significant financial asset, but it may also embody personal histories, cultural identity and generations of collecting.
For families considering succession, inheritance or the future of a substantial collection, the question is not always simply whether to retain or sell. There may be opportunities to place works with public institutions, arrange exhibitions, explore long-term loans or consider relevant heritage and tax provisions.
My approach is to explore the available options in the context of each collection, balancing financial considerations with historical importance, family circumstances and the potential for public engagement.
Where appropriate, I work alongside legal, tax and other specialist advisers to help clients understand the practical options available to them. This is particularly important where a collection has the potential to make a lasting contribution to public collections or cultural life.
Experience and Specialist Knowledge
During my time within the international auction world, I developed extensive experience across valuations, business development and the commercial management of art, progressing to senior roles including Associate Director, Head of Business Development UK and General Valuer.
My work has involved engaging with private collectors, estates, institutions and professional advisers, alongside projects focused on Scottish art and wider British art-historical subjects.
I have also worked with private galleries and independent art-market professionals, broadening my understanding of the different ways works are researched, presented, placed and traded beyond the auction room.
A particularly rewarding aspect of my work has been contributing to the valuation and documentation of the Paisley Art Institute Collection. Projects of this nature demonstrate the importance of combining rigorous cataloguing and valuation with an understanding of the cultural significance of a collection and its place within Scotland's artistic heritage.
This experience underpins my work today through James D S McNaught | Art Advisory, where I bring together art-historical knowledge, market experience and a personal, relationship-led approach to advising clients.
